UKiset

What is the UKiset?

In short, the UKiset is a standardized assessment test taken by international students, designed for international students seeking entry into British curriculum schools, particularly in the independent sector.

Launched in 2014, the UKiset evaluates English language proficiency, numeracy, literacy, reasoning skills, and overall aptitude for learning, comparing applicants’ results to British students of the same age.

The test can be taken once every four months at our JD Consultancy authorised test centre in China (Tianjin), or in the UK at the UKiset head office near Trafalgar Square, and at some selected schools.

Results are valid for one year after the test date.

Unlike its age-specific British equivalents – the 7+, 11+, 13+ or GCSEs –UKiset can be taken by all students aged between 9 years and 6 months and 17 years and 11 months who wish to enter British schools (or UK curriculum schools abroad). Test results are typically available within two business days.

UKiset measures four key skill areas:

English skills – grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, listening and creative writing

Mathematics – working with numbers, value, and sequences

Non-Verbal Reasoning – solving problems using pictures, diagrams and patterns

Verbal Reasoning – the ability to work with words and language

The test takes approximately 2 hours and is conducted mainly online (though there is a handwritten essay component), and UKiset results are accepted by almost all British schools.

Why take the UKiset?

There are several reasons for taking the UKiset. Primarily, it is used for entry into British or British curriculum schools, but it can also be taken by students who wish to join a language school or international study center in the UK.

Additionally, some students (or parents) may use the UKiset to gauge their performance compared to British students, or to set improvement goals over six- or twelve-month periods

.Similarly, teachers may also use the UKiset for this purpose.

ISEB

Commissioned by the Independent Schools Examinations Board and designed by GL Assessment. The Pre-Test has been created as an age-standardised test of ability and is currently the most widely accepted pre-test used by independent schools.

The test is part of the entry process for Britain’s top senior schools. It can only be taken once, and if taken again, the first result will still stand.

The test lasts 2.5 hours in total and takes place either at the student’s current school or the school they are applying to. It is an adaptive multiple-choice examination, meaning the questions the student answers will change depending on how difficult they are finding the test. The more they get right, the harder the questions will become, and vice versa. As a result, no two students will sit the same test.

The Pre-Test is made up of 4 individual parts:

Non-Verbal Reasoning (solving problems using pictures, diagrams and patterns)

Verbal Reasoning (the ability to work with words and language)

Mathematics (working with numbers, value, and sequences)

English skills (sentence completion, vocabulary, reading comprehension and spelling).

The tests can be taken together or separately, but once a section has been started, it must be completed.

English - 40 minutes

Maths – 40 minutes

Verbal reasoning - 25 minutes

Non-verbal reasoning – 30 minutes

Students take the exam when they are either in year 6 (the year they turn 11) or occasionally in year 7 (the year they turn 12).
